About Julie
Julie is a designer working across opera, theatre and exhibition. She has been awarded four Sydney Theatre Awards for Best Costume Design and has been nominated for, and won, multiple Green Room, Helpmann and Australian Production Design Awards for her costume designs in opera and theatre.
Julie’s opera costume designs for Opera Australia include Carmen staged on Sydney Harbour, Salome and La Bohème. La Bohème has become an OA classic and has been performed every year since 2011. Her theatre costume design credits include Ghosts, Travesties and The Tempest. Her musical theatre credits include The Rocky Horror Show, Company and Little Women.
Julie has held many creative arts leadership positions, including Director for Centre of Design Practices – NIDA, Vice President for the Australian Production Guild, Academic Board member – NIDA, and Head of Design at the Hong Kong Academy for the Performing Arts.
In 2013, Julie attained a Master of Arts degree for her research into Costume Design on Screen, and in 2018, she earned a Doctor of Arts degree for her Costume Design research for Stage at the University of Sydney.
She is currently co-designing the ‘1001 Remarkable Objects‘ Exhibition, curated by Leo Schofield AM for the Powerhouse Museum Sydney - the largest scale exhibition that MAAS has ever produced.
